Calgary Girls' School

Today a Community of girls… Tomorrow our Community Leaders

Principal's Message

The Calgary Girl's School is a place where girls find a home. It is a community where girls form lifelong friendships and relationships based on the rich learning experiences of the classroom. This is apparent regardless of whether one tours the hallways of the Bel Aire site, home to the grade four and five students or the Lakeview site where grade six to nine students are housed. Throughout, girls are engaged in learning with partners or groups. One can hear debate, view small groups of girls gathered around a math problem, see pockets of girls producing an iMovie to represent their learning, observe scientific inquiry in action, and hear the strains of beautiful singing, to name but a few of the everyday occurrences at the school.

At the Calgary Girls' School, learners are encouraged to give back to the community at large. Opportunities for girls to "take action" are abundant and whether the action arises from formal learning experiences or the broader community, girls are involved in school wide actions such as the Run for the Cure, and other organizations as Free the Children, Shave Your Lid for a Kid, and The Children's Wish Foundation.

The staff at the Calgary Girls' School is outstanding. This is a staff that is committed to the learning of all students beyond the mandated Alberta Program of Studies. Engagement is a way of life and it would be an anomaly for a girl to be disengaged from learning, as the quality of learning experiences is exceptional. Additionally, and most importantly, this is a staff that cares. The level of care shows in all aspects of school life so that girls truly feel a sense of community and belonging. Girls are treated with respect and kindness throughout their years at the school. They are encouraged to find their voice as well as to learn what it means to work well with each other. This is a place where girls learn to work through difficulties with one another in a way that respects the dignity of all concerned. The guidance offered by the staff is apparent in their everyday interactions with girls as well as through the Go Girls curriculum that is a hallmark of the school.

Calgary Girls' School students form a strong identity with the school. The sense of belonging that girls feel begins from the first days of grade four and extends to their years after grade nine graduation to their high school years and beyond. As one graduate so aptly stated, "You can take the girl out of the Girls' School, but you can't take the Girls' School out of the girl."
